1921 Heine Velox Sedan

1921-Heine-Velox-001

One of five Heine Velox’s made in 1921, this is the only of three sedans that were produced. Gustov Heine was a German who emigrated to the US in the late 1800′s.  After a take-0ver of a piano factory, he pursued his love of automobiles and in the early 1900′s produced some fast yet simple and low maintenance automobiles winning world speed/endurance records.  His San Francisco based automobile company was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.  He set out to build the ultimate luxury car in the late 1910′s and hand built five Heine Velox automobiles. One convertible, one limousine, and three sedans. This is believed to be the only surviving sedan of the three. The other two were rumored to be destroyed; one by fire and the other is said to have lost a fight with a locomotive at a railroad crossing.

Restoration

The restoration of this car will begin when we move to our new shop later this year. It is anticipated that because of the relatively poor condition of the vehicle, the restoration will take approximately two years. Although this appears to be the most complete Heine Velox in existence today, it will still require a great deal of research and parts to complete it. This vehicle still has the original hydraulic brakes, cabin oil filler, windshield ventilation system, dipping (dimming) headlights, and the original spoked wheels. This is believed to be the Heine Velox that was given to Gustav’s brother and may have been used as a chicken coop for years. It was sold at an estate auction in the 1970s from its resting place in northern California. It was purchased by a collector and remained in-tact and unrestored until it was sold to Mr. McAllister in Colorado as part of an estate auction approximately 10 years ago.

Complete

Please visit both our web site over the next few years to see the progress or if you prefer, drop in and see the real automobile as we return it to Gustov Heine’s previous vision of one of the greatest cars of all time.

I wrote the article ” Gustave Otto Heine and his cars” Society of Automotive Historians Review 1981. I was interested that this vehicle was the one I tried to trace when I was researching my article, but could never quite get the correct contacts to contact the owner. He apparently was eccentric and not easy to find. A few years ago another HV sedan was restored, and went through ebay and the Imperial Collection. I thought that that car was the one your now restoring, but now I realize it was probably one of two HVs that was in the Brucker collection in southern California. And the ex-Harrah’s vehicle was sold off to a museum in Alaska. I wish you well with the project and look forward to seeing how the restoration goes.

There are two complete Heine-Veloxes in existence. The Limousine (the former chicken coop) is in a museum in Shanghai, and the Sporting Victoria is in the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska: http://fountainheadauto.blogspot.com/2010/08/heine-velox-update-4.html
